What is a gel mattress?
Quite simply, an ActiGel®, or gel mattress is a mattress featuring gel elements. This element can come in the shape of a gel pad layer on the top of the gel mattress, or a padded gel layer beneath the mattress layers. However, there is also a gel memory foam mattress, with a gel layer poured into memory foam. Gel memory foam mattresses are the most common type of gel beds and gel can also be combined with a latex mattress or pocket spring mattresses.
What are the benefits of a gel mattress?
Our range of Therapur ActiGel® or gel topped mattresses is a relatively new phenomenon in the bed and mattress industry. Gel beds are a popular sleeping solution because of the unparalleled levels of comfort they offer, which can help keep you cool during the night and offer optimum levels of cushioning. Let’s talk about the benefits of a gel mattress below.
Regulate temperature
A gel topped mattress can help to regulate the body’s temperature throughout the night, ensuring that you enjoy a more restful and therefore better‐quality sleep. Gel mattresses were made to combat complaints about memory foam beds becoming uncomfortably hot during the night. Having a gel bed is designed to help create a cooler sleeping environment, which is perfect for those who get hot at night. A gel memory foam mattress is the best of both worlds, with the ultimate comfort and keeping you cool while you sleep.
Support pressure points
A gel mattress also helps to provide extra comfort and moulds to your body, supporting pressure points. Combined with the base support of your choice of mattress, the features of a gel topped mattress work to provide a floating effect. This gives total comfort and support, ensuring that you receive a good night’s sleep, every night. Due to this level of cushioning, a gel bed is recommended for all sleeping positions, including:
Side sleepers
With side sleepers, your pressure points include your hips and shoulders, both of which are sensitive to discomfort if not cushioned properly. A gel topped mattress in medium grade can reduce feelings of pressure on these points while you lie in bed.
Back sleepers
For those who sleep on their back, the common pressure points include your spine and buttocks. A medium or firm grade gel mattress provides the right amount of support to help the spine maintain its neutral position, while also reducing heaviness on your joints, meaning you’re less likely to wake up feeling stiff and sore.
Front sleepers
Finally, for those who sleep on their front, pressure points include the knees, hips and rib cage. For front sleepers, the support of a firm or very firm gel mattress can mould to your body shape and aid the spine’s alignment.
